Excerpt from the book Fortunate Families:
Catholic
Families With Lesbian Daughters and Gay Sons "This was my first real awareness of gay people - or
homosexuals as they were then referred to in the
media. The whole concept of homosexuality was
completely foreign to me. Yet, as I read the
newspaper account of the riots, I felt sympathy for
the gay men who were treated with such contempt by
the law. It never crossed my mind, not for a second,
that one of my children was gay."
